I just wired up a 12volt dc to 120vac sine wave inverter
and connected five 12v sealed batteries

see pix http://www.plazaearth.com/philo/battery.jpg

I calculate that I have about 24 hours of computer backup.

Of course...that's nuts because I can live without my computer for 24 hours
but now realize I could not live without coffee for more than 8 hours.

My inverter is only 750VA and my coffee maker is 900watts (gasp).

So its back to the drawing board!

Obviously you need to overclock your UPS... copper watercooled 'sinks or a
prometia, purified copper rewound transformer... or just get an RV
coffeemaker, run it straight from a battery.

What do you have chaging that rack? Whatever it is, is probably worth
more than the UPS.

Hey maybe i could plug my coffee maker into it
then boil the water by putting a kettle directly on top of the power
transformer!

At any rate...the UPS is built by Best Power Products
and has a built-in hysteresis loop charger. Of course the charger
would take a week to recharge all those batteries...
however I have a 90 amp charger I can hook up if necessary.

again ...all surplus equipment from a former company i worked at
that got bought out.

What you need is one of the Trace 3600VA inverter/charger units sold for RV
usage. They are available for 12V, 24V, and (I believe) 48V battery packs
with 24V being the most common on big bus-type RVs. One of these will easily
run a window-type AC which you see mounted in the fiberglass housings on the
top of so many conversions.

Just get yourself a whole house generator converted to natural gas with an
automatic transfer switch and a 5 minute UPS will do and you'll have all the
comforts of home...

A "former company"??? What is it now??? A subsidiary??? Or, do you mean a
company you formerly worked at???

Wouldn't it simply be easier to just chug a cola?

But, if you just have to have coffee, there are single cup coffee
makers and other low wattage coffee makers. Another option is a
battery operated coffee grinder and battery operated coffee maker. I
saw such a beast at a camping show once. So much for "roughing it".
